Cash would be a great gift. Besides the enormous student loans, she's just starting out in life and will need to put down deposits for rent, new car, etc. Non-cash gift would be things that she can use everyday such as a nice pen, wallet, watch, etc. These will be greatly appreciated. Trust me, by the time you finish medschool, everything you own is worn and old. For a girl, gift certificates to a spa would be amazing. Her intern year is very gruelling and she will be able to relax on her rarely day off.

I would advise against scrubs or labcoat. Scrubs get filthy very quickly. I guess it depends on her specialty. If she's going into radiology, they'll last forever. :-D As a surgical resident, I wouldn't want to wash my scrubs at home with the crap that gets on them. As for labcoats, every program will provide her with 2-3 per year. My program actually reimburses me for their purchase so I get to choose the style I want. Textbooks, journals and membership to professional associations are also things that most residencies will pay for. Also avoid getting her medical equipment. Everything she'll need for residency she will already have or the hospital will have.
